John Dewan, FSA, left his career at AON Insurance in the 1980’s to become a “Sports Actuary”. At his first company, STATS, Inc., John pioneered sports analytics with the most timely and comprehensive sports database, including the first ever real-time boxscores in all four major sports. In 2000, STATS, Inc. was sold to Rupert Murdoch and Fox News.
John subsequently started another company, Sports Info Solutions, where he continues specializing in analytical services to 25 of the 30 teams in Major League Baseball. SIS has recently expanded into football. John Dewan is also the author of four editions of The Fielding Bible which has revolutionized defensive baseball analytics resulting in defensive changes on the field such as “The Shift” and evaluation of players with new information such as Defensive Runs Saved.
Rob brings a wealth of sports content industry experience to BIS, having worked for almost 20 years in the industry. He is currently responsible for the overall strategic vision and financial success of the organization after three years of directing the IT department. He earned his undergraduate degree from DeSales University in politics/pre-law and did his graduate work at Temple University in business administration and journalism and is a certified tax preparer. He resides in East Allen Township with his wife Debbie and enjoys spending his free time up at their lake house fishing and writing.
Joe contributes to the innovative research and analytics work done at BIS through his role in Research and Development. He has experience working for three MLB clubs, having interned in Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Mets prior to joining BIS. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, where he studied Civil Engineering, and made his transition into the baseball industry after completing the dual degree MBA/M.S. in Sports Management program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Tim oversees baseball data collection at the major league, minor league, and college levels, reporting to the President of the company. Starting in 2017, he assumed leadership in the planning, scheduling, and execution of all three operations, assuring that the company excels in its mission to collect deep, accurate, and timely data.”
Tim joined the company in 2013 as a Video Scout and was hired full-time as an Operations Associate in May 2014. He was promoted to the position of Operations Analyst and Minor League Coordinator in January 2015. He has led the company’s growing minor league operation for the past two years and has made a positive impact throughout the Operations department, particularly in the area of scorer training and data quality. Prior to joining BIS, Tim studied Economics and Psychology at Swarthmore College, where he also played baseball.
Since 1975, Bill James has been writing about baseball and compiling reference books about baseball. His progressive baseball analysis has earned him broad respect of the baseball community. He is currently the Senior Baseball Operations Advisor for the Boston Red Sox.
Corey oversees business development where he is responsible for maintaining and developing business relationships, creating custom solutions to meet client needs and heading up the Sports Info Solutions Twitter account (@SportsInfo_SIS). He gained prior experience working for Topgolf, FantasyLabs, and MLB Advanced Media. Corey graduated from Marist College with a degree from their Sports Communication program. In his spare time, Corey enjoys Daily Fantasy Sports, electronic music, and Rocket League.
Matt leads the football-focused business development, operations, and research & development efforts. His responsibilities include building and maintaining business relationships, supervising the football data collection operation, collaborating with R&D staff to develop new analyses and products, and implementing business strategies to help the company achieve success in the football data and analytics industry.
Prior to his promotion, Matt worked with Sports Info Solutions as a football consultant while pursuing his Masters in Sports Management from Columbia University. Previously, Matt spent six seasons as a scout for the New Orleans Saints and the Cleveland Browns following his graduation from Duke University in 2008.
Craig has spent over 10 years building software to meet the needs of a diverse set of companies. His experience spans a wide spectrum of languages, platforms and applications, and he is continually working on learning still more. Craig received his degree in Information Science & Technology from Penn State in 2004. He currently resides in Macungie with his wonderful wife, and has two children who like to use him as a tackle dummy.
Trish has spent 15 plus years building and integrating software applications and working with data and databases for a variety of industries including electric utilities, healthcare, and education. Trish graduated from Moravian College in 2000 with a degree in Computer Science and Business, then from Lehigh University in 2011 with a Masters Degree in Education. Trish also has several years teaching experience, which she finds as an invaluable asset. She also coaches and volunteers in her spare time. Trish currently resides in North Whitehall with her husband and two children.
Brandyn has 8 years experience supporting IT infrastructure primarily within warehousing and logistics. His experience spans a wide spectrum of technologies within networks, servers, and security. He currently resides in Allentown.
Ben is a recent graduate of the University of Windsor, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and was a two-time Pitcher of the Year for the Windsor Lancers, winning a CIBA national championship in 2013. He has 2 years of experience in the areas of software development and IT, and this is his first job in the baseball industry. When not in the office or on the diamond, he can be found at the nearest movie theater.
Will graduated from Eckerd College in 2014, with a degree in math and minors in computer science and journalism. He was also a sports editor for their award-winning student newspaper, the Current, and covered high school football for the Tampa Bay Times for a season. After completing college, he then attended App Academy, where he improved his programming skills before accepting an IT position with BIS.
Joe is a graduate of Bloomsburg University, where he earned a degree in computer forensics. He began as an intern in September 2016 and eventually worked his way to a full-time position here at SIS in June 2017. He does a lot of work on our website, SISDataHub, and helped expand it to show even more NFL and College data.
Mark Simon came to BIS in February 2018 after nearly 16 years as a researcher for ESPN, 9 working on “Baseball Tonight.” Mark also wrote regularly about baseball and other sports for ESPN.com, co-hosted the Baseball Today podcast, wrote/voiced features for ESPN Radio’s baseball coverage. He also co-ran the @ESPNStatsInfo Twitter feed. He is the author of the book The Yankees Index, published in June 2016. Mark is a graduate of The College of New Jersey with a degree in journalism.
Alex contributes to Research and Development efforts across both baseball and football. A Philadelphia area native, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2012 and has experience in statistics and software testing. He comes to SIS after interning in the Boston Red Sox Baseball Operations department.
Lindsay graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a Master of Science degree in Applied Math and Statistics. At Mines, she was a Graduate Teaching Fellow teaching undergraduate Probability and Statistics. In 2016, she presented her Master’s thesis at the SABR Analytics Conference in Phoenix. Shortly after, she started working in the Research and Development department at SIS. It was her first job out of college and first in the sports industry. When she is not working, she enjoys traveling and watching sports with her husband Tim.
Brian works as part of the Research and Development team to consistently produce meaningful and insightful analysis. Originally joining SIS as a Video Scout in 2016, he then interned in the R&D department before becoming a full-time member. He graduated from nearby Lehigh University in 2017 with degrees in computer science and statistics.
Jon is primarily responsible for the minor league data collection operation which includes hiring, training and scheduling people to work games at the sixty AA and AAA cities. He is an expert on the software used to input pitch by pitch data recorded during game scoring. He spent much of the last two seasons “fixing” errors in files submitted by the several hundred scorers working the various MiLB contests for BIS.
Dan works on the MLB side of the data collection operation at SIS. His responsibilities include the hiring, training and supervision of the BIS video scouts, as well as quality control of data throughout the season.
Before coming to SIS, he worked for the New York Yankees in Tampa, FL. While there, Dan spent time in several departments, including baseball operations, player development and marketing. He also moonlighted as the official scorekeeper for the Yankees’ Single-A affiliate in Tampa.
Dan is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, OH, where he studied Economics and Spanish.
Todd oversees the pitch charting operation as well as performing data quality control. Todd brings 18 years of Major League Baseball scouting experience to SIS.
Jim helps out with minor league scoring issues. He is a longtime men’s amateur baseball umpire and is the person to ask about rules and official scoring interpretations. He has degrees in Chemical Engineering and Computer Science.
Dan oversees the football operation, including all aspects of data collection and management of the football Video Scouts and Senior Video Scouts within the company. He has been the Football Operations Coordinator since the initiation of the operation and helped lead the company’s expansion into college football. He has done standout work at SIS by creating a multitude of reports and processes to ensure that our data is the industry leader in accuracy. Dan joined the company in 2014 as a Video Scout. He also completed a Research & Development analyst internship with SIS, helping complete The Fielding Bible – Volume IV. He graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelors and Masters degree in Applied Statistics.
James leads the in-house Minor League data collection efforts, ensuring things run smoothly while contributing in other areas in both the Baseball and Football operations. Prior to joining SIS as a Video Scout in 2014, he played collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, coached high school and collegiate summer ball, and worked for Ripken Baseball, ERA Sports, Inc., and Elite Sports Academy. James graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management.
Nathan is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO where he earned a degree in Sports Management. Prior to SIS, he interned with three professional teams in Illinois, West Virginia, and Ohio before becoming a video scout in 2014. Nathan is a native of Normal, Illinois and is a devoted Cubs fan.
Jason graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2013, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and minored in Economics. He joined BIS as a video scout in 2014 and 2015 before being hired full-time in 2015. Jason is a Lehigh Valley native.
Mike started as a baseball Video Scout in 2015 and also was a part of our inaugural season of data collection for football. He was promoted to a full time Operations Associate position in 2016 helping both baseball and football operations in quality control and data collection. Mike graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and also has a Masters in Sports Management from Liberty University.
Josh contributes to both the Football and Baseball data collection operations at SIS. On the baseball side his focus is on all aspects of the pitch charting operation and on supervising video scouts on the MLB level. For football, he takes a lead on the quality control of the data and assists wherever needed. He started as a video scout in 2014 and contributed scouting reports to The Fielding Bible-Volume IV. He received a Bachelors degree in philosophy and economics and a Masters degree in philosophy from the University of Cincinnati.
Carol brings over 15 years Secretarial and Human Resource experience to SIS. She assists the BIS team in managing the day to day office administrative duties, ranging from answering phones and ordering supplies, to assisting with the influx of video scouts hired each baseball season. When not working she enjoys cooking and entertaining friends and family!
Jason is a recent addition to our accounting department, working closely with the management team to process billing, expenses and monthly reporting. Prior to joining SIS, Jason was a stay at home dad and continues to be heavily engaged in his community through Little League Baseball, Boy Scouts, and volunteering. He graduated from The University of Wisconsin with his Masters in Public Accounting.
