The​ golden​ rule​ of​ NFL​ scouting​ is “traits​ over production.”

However,​ that doesn’t​ mean​ statistical analysis​ isn’t​ important​ or​ widely​​ used across the NFL. In my opinion, nothing will replace an educated eye when it comes to best understanding a college player’s talent and traits, but production-based metrics are a beneficial complement. Smart evaluators use all evidence available to best understand the players they study.

More important than the implementation is the understanding. It is easy to drown in the overload of statistical information, which is why it is vital to focus on metrics that translate, especially at the quarterback position.
