Behind the balls and strikes: A look at the tendencies of the World Series umpires

Game 6 of the ALCS was an example of how the home plate umpire can affect the outcome of a game. Marvin Hudson appeared to widen his strike zone at times, drawing the ire of a number of players, notably Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner. Gardner had struck out to end an early Yankees rally, with Astros pitcher Josh James benefitting from two favorable strike calls, one on the inside edge and one on the outside edge.

It’s important to know your umpires. Look in the dugouts of some teams and you can see heat maps on the walls showing their tendencies.
