‘We couldn’t resist’: Andrelton Simmons has the Twins thinking big defensively

Andrelton Simmons is one of the best defensive shortstops ever, a four-time Gold Glove winner whose plus-191 Defensive Runs Saved rank third in MLB history behind Ozzie Smith and Mark Belanger. However, last year’s DRS was negative for the first time in his career, naturally leading to questions about whether he’s lost a step at age 31.

Simmons’ one-year, $10.5 million deal became official Sunday, and the Twins’ new starting shortstop made it clear during his introductory media session that he believes a badly sprained left ankle suffered in the Angels’ fourth game, not any sort of age-related decline, was to blame for uncharacteristically mediocre fielding numbers in the abbreviated 2020 season.
