* The Patriots have been surging up the leaderboards as of late, jumping from 18th to 10th in our Total Points Per Play rankings. Their offense in particular seems to have bounced back, climbing 17 spots from 28th to 11th, and AJ Brown is expected to return this week.
* The Vikings and 49ers lead the league in wins, both posting a 5-0 record so far. They are doing it in different ways, with the former leading the league in defensive Total Points Per Play and the latter ranking 2nd in offense.
* Even with having to take last week off, incumbent Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III still leads all running backs in Total Points. He is powering a Chiefs rushing attack that also ranks 1st in rushing Total Points Per Play.
* Mike Evans had a field day against the vaunted Seahawks defense, playing a huge part in making sure the matchup did not play out the same as last year. He ranks first among all receivers in Total Points and is similarly leading a 49ers receiving corps that ranks 1st in receiving Total Points Per Play.
* 2nd overall pick David Bailey has jumped to 5th in the linebackers Total Points leaderboard after posting three sacks last week against the Browns. The Jets rank 9th in Pass Rushing Total Points this season, a major improvement from their second-to-last ranking a year ago.

* We added some leaderboards to the PDF and are highlighting a couple of them here. One is completion percentage above expectation. Lamar Jackson is the leader. His expected completion percentage, based on the factors in our calculation (throw depth and direction among them), is close to 63%. His actual completion percentage is 71%. Thus, he’s 8% above expectation (71%-63%).
* The other stat we added is contested catches, which credits receivers for making catches in situations in which a defensive player is within arm’s length of them. Mike Evans added four of them this past Sunday to take the lead with 12 contested catches. Brock Purdy has connected with Evans 63% of the time in contested situations, good for 2nd-best in the NFL.
* Even with being the only true threat to opposing defenses, Jaxon Smith-Njigba seemingly cannot be stopped, leading the league both in receiving yards (again) and touchdowns caught. Deep targets have played a significant role with Smith-Njigba bringing down seven of them to lead his peers.

Matchups and Mismatches
When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week. The Total Points PDF has this for each game in the NFL in a given week.
You can also find much of this information at our subscripton site, SIS DataHub Pro.
Here are some things we noticed:
(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)
* The Broncos will look to get home against the Seahawks tonight. Though the Seahawks rank 2nd in pass blocking, they gave up five sacks last week, and Denver ranks 2nd in rushing the quarterback.
* The Texans will try to continue saving their season this week in London against the Jaguars. Their best chance is most likely in the trenches with their 4th-ranked pass rush going against Jacksonville’s second-to-last pass blocking unit.
* After giving the Buccaneers their first win, the Cowboys will look to bounce back Sunday night against the Packers. The game may be decided in the air; the Cowboys’ passing attack ranks 2nd while the Packers’ secondary ranks 7th in coverage.
