2026 Season Preview: Are The White Sox A Good Defensive Team?

Colson Montgomery, wearing the White Sox alternate red jerseys (almost a tank top) with Chicago written across the front, black pants and a black cap, makes a sidearm throw from the shortstop position.

Colson Montgomery is the standout on a White Sox team that is lacking in standout defensive players.

2025 Team Defensive Runs Saved Rank: T-24th

Team Strengths

Shortstop Colson Montgomery came up in July and impressed with both his power (21 home runs) and his defense (7 Runs Saved at that position). He was especially good at turning balls into outs on those hit in the shortstop-third base hole (even though his average throw velocity is below MLB average). He’s one of the most promising players in this White Sox rebuild.

Other than that, the team’s best defensive players are probably backups. Versatile middle infielder Luisangel Acuña had 5 Runs Saved in 81 games at second base last season, but he’s behind Chase Meidroth (who rates as an average defensive player) on the depth chart.

Team Weaknesses

It’s tough to be optimistic about the White Sox defense because there isn’t a lot of strength among the everyday players. If we put up their projected lineup (per FanGraphs), there’s not a lot to brag about. Beyond Montgomery, Austin Hays is the one you could feel best about but he’s played only 8 games in right field since the start of 2023.

Player 2025 Runs Saved at Position
C  Edgar Quero -8
1B Munetaka Murakami 0 (19 innings)
2B Chase Meidroth -1
SS Colson Montgomery 7
3B Miguel Vargas -3
LF Andrew Benintendi -3
CF Brooks Baldwin -1 (26 games)
RF Austin Hays 0 (4 innings)

Munetaka Murakami hasn’t played much first base the last six seasons. He did not rate well as a good defender there in NPB in 2019 and has never been considered a good defensive third baseman.

Other Things To Know

Brooks Baldwin is interesting because of his versatility. He played six defensive positions last year. There isn’t enough sample size to make a good evaluation, though he had an abundance of misplays and errors in brief looks at second base, third base and left field.

Are the White Sox A Good Defensive Team?

No. There are multiple spots where the numbers aren’t great. Montgomery is the best one to watch among their defensive players for now.
