Summary:
Beck is an experienced quarterback who can play in structure with good pocket awareness and sufficient processing ability, but his struggles under pressure and limited arm talent create a low ceiling for him as a passer at the next level.
Carson Beck is an experienced quarterback who helped lead the Miami Hurricanes to their first National Championship game appearance in 23 years. He was the facilitator of Miami’s spread offense that leaned on its run game and talented offensive line unit. He spent 6 seasons in college utilizing both the normal redshirt season and the extra year of eligibility granted due the COVID 2020 season. He spent his first 5 seasons at Georgia where he was the backup QB for back-to-back national championship seasons. He became the full-time starter at UGA in 2023. He started in 43 of 55 games played in his collegiate career. Late in the 2024 season, he suffered a torn UCL and had internal brace surgery that prevented him from finishing the year out and leaked into his offseason at Miami. He displays good size for the position, but is a limited athlete lacking explosiveness to extend plays with his legs consistently. Beck has shown that he can play through adversity and be a leader for multiple programs throughout his collegiate career.
Beck can be an efficient distributor of an offense with reliable short accuracy and the ability to work through his progressions. He can throw a catchable ball with touch when he is comfortable and has time in the pocket. His touch can also extend to the intermediate area of the field where he has shown he can layer the ball over the second level of the defense either down the seams or to hit a hole shot on the edges of the field. He is willing to work the middle of the field on breaking routes, but can serve to throw with more anticipation as there will be tighter windows to throw in at the professional ranks. His deep ball accuracy is inconsistent and he will often leave throws short allowing defenders to make a play on the ball.
He can maneuver the pocket fairly well, knowing when to step up or drift and buy a little extra time to deliver a throw down field. He shows maturity in this aspect of his game, knowing not to bail from clean pockets or duck his eyes when needing to maneuver around. When he faces pressure, he can struggle to deliver the ball accurately and will make poor decisions that put the ball in harm’s way. When he is playing on time and in structure he can throw with sufficient velocity, but when the area around his feet gets muddy, he can struggle to put enough force behind the ball to deliver it cleanly downfield. His release is fairly quick, and isn’t elongated in any way. He can work through his reads efficiently, and does a good job to move his feet with his eyes so he isn’t wasting any time in the pocket. There are times when he can work to his checkdown a little too quickly, when there are chances to create a bigger play.
Beck has struggled to show that he can be a threat as a runner either in a designed or out of structure manner. He lacks twitch and explosion in his lower half to consistently evade pressure and extend plays, but he has shown that he can get a few yards to avoid negative plays. He does have good size and strength to his frame to work through contact as a runner.
Beck projects to be a backup quarterback at the next level with the requisite ability to be a circumstantial starter if called upon. His comfort as a true pocket passer with reliable short-area accuracy and pocket awareness provide a solid floor for him as a passer. He will fall into the “win in spite of” QB bucket, but he can provide stability to an offense with the right coaching and talent to surround him. He needs to improve his poise under pressure and limit the turnover-worthy plays to raise his floor as quarterback.
