Summary:
Lemon is a sudden receiver with consistent hands that can separate at the LOS, in his route, and at the catch point, making him a prospect that should develop into a passer’s favorite target when they need to make a completion, though his lack of catch radius and unpolished skill set could lead to some growing pains early in his career.
Overall Rank:18th;
Positional Rank: 4th;
Grade: 6.7 (strong starter);
Low Injury Risk
Makai Lemon plays receiver in USC’s tempo-based, spread offense. In his 3 seasons, Lemon started in 17 of his 30 games played and he was used in a variety of ways. As a freshman, he saw snaps on offense, defense, and special teams. While growing into an offensive role, Lemon lined up primarily inside as a receiver, with increased outside snaps in 2025. Though he did not miss any time for injury, he did suffer a head/neck injury against Michigan in 2024, forcing an ambulance trip to the hospital. As an athlete, Lemon is sudden with good balance and competitive fire, but his lack of size and strength will lead him to getting pushed around early in his career.
As a receiver, Lemon frequently wins at the LOS with his suddenness and agility. Having multiple releases in his arsenal, Lemon is able to set up his opponent and get free in either direction. He does have some struggles against physicality and can get eliminated by a proper press. Lack of power shows throughout his game, as he will get rerouted too easily by traffic and savvy defenders. When getting into his routes, Lemon uses his stem to bait opponents, and he can create explosive plays off of double-moves as a pro. There is no route that Lemon is unable to run and he frequently wins in all three phases.
Once the ball is in the air, Lemon naturally adjusts his gait in order to stave off the defender before separating at the last second to attack the ball. Lemon lacks ideal catch radius and is not the most explosive leaper, but he times each step precisely and his nimble body control allows him to contort through the air and snare the ball. Any throw near him will be brought in by Lemon, as his hands are consistently reliable whether rising up for a deep ball or getting sandwiched across the middle. There is no fear in his approach to any play, and he is built to make critical catches at the next level. With the ball in his hands, Lemon gets upfield in a hurry and will fall forward when being wrapped up. Though his burst and balance are ostensive, Lemon is too frequently brought down by the first man to rely on YAC in the NFL. Due to his penchant for picking up crucial yards, critical downs will be where he shines the most, and he will be a focal point on 3rd downs and in the red area.
In the run game, Lemon’s return experience is clear with the ball in his hands, as he sees creases in the defense and exploits them with his explosiveness. Although he made many big plays in college as a ballcarrier, he does not have enough wiggle or contact balance to be a true weapon on gadget plays in the NFL. As a blocker, Lemon does his best to overcome his size deficiency with tenacity and fundamentals. Stalemates will be acceptable for him, and he has enough violence to be used as an end of line crack-back blocker.
Overall, Lemon is a modern NFL receiver that wins with suddenness and catches everything. He is built to be a high-volume pass catcher, and he has the wherewithal and willingness to sacrifice his body and be a reliable chain-mover. On the inside is where Lemon will be the most useful, though he has enough separation skills to win on the outside. Moving pre-snap is something that he is comfortable with and a savvy playcaller will be able to scheme him open with regularity. Lemon can also slot in as a punt and/or kick returner immediately. Outside of that, Lemon does not project to make a huge impact on 4th downs, as his lack of bulk and strength do not lend themselves to the role of gunner or jammer.
