Stat of the Week: MLB’s Defensive All-Stars

Headshots of 4 players selected - JJ Wetherholt (Cardinals 2B), Andy Pages (Dodgers CF), Nick Kurtz (Athletics 1B), and Ceddanne Rafaela (Red Sox CF)

Which players were their league’s leaders in Defensive Runs Saved in the first half.

If we were to pick a lineup of the Defensive All-Stars for each league to this point in the season, who would we pick?

The cleanest way to do this is to look at the Defensive Runs Saved leaderboards and select the top players, so that’s what we’ll do. We’ll add a tiebreaker of innings played so that we can choose one player at each position.

Here are the NL Defensive All-Stars:

1B- Ty France has had a stellar defensive reputation throughout his career. He has a sizable lead at first base heading into the break. After winning his first Gold Glove in the AL last season, he has a pretty good chance at a Fielding Bible Award if he can keep this up.

2B- JJ Wetherholt hasn’t just been one of the top NL rookies. He’s been one of the league’s top players. He ranks 6th in Wins Above Replacement among NL position players this season. His defense is a big part of that. His 11 Runs Saved are almost equal parts range and finishing the play.

3B- Before getting hurt Matt Chapman was playing a standout third base this season. He’s won three Fielding Bible Awards in his career. He’s been great turning double plays (15 turned in 16 opportunities!) and is having one of his best seasons on balls hit to his right. The aging curve doesn’t seem to have gotten him yet.

SS- Geraldo Perdomo edges out Mookie Betts by the innings tiebreaker. Perdomo has been a solid defensive player since 2024 after rating a little below average in the early part of his career. His strength has been getting to balls in the 5-6 hole and turning them into outs.

LF- Super versatile Mauricio Dubon has split time this season mostly between left field and shortstop, with a little center field and third base thrown in. Dubon has won two Gold Gloves as a utility player and has come close to winning the Fielding Bible Award’s version of that (we call it Multi-Position). One thing that’s helping him: He’s allowed only 22% of baserunners to take an extra base on balls he’s fielded. The MLB average is 38%.

CF- Andy Pages of the Dodgers has turned himself into a potential MVP candidate with his first half play. He’s channeled the desire to get to the ball that led to the 2025 World Series Game 7-saving catch into something positive in 2026. He also leads all players in Outfield Arm Runs Saved. This all represents quite a turnaround for Pages, who had -8 and -1 Runs Saved in center field the past two seasons.

RF- Seiya Suzuki had never had more than 3 Runs Saved as a right fielder, but he leads NL players with 7 this season. He has 10 Good Fielding Plays in 59 games there, already a career-high for him, which is impressive considering he’s played as many as 132 games in right field in a season. If we told you a Cubs outfielder would be representing on this team, you’d have probably guessed Pete Crow-Armstrong, but it’s not him, not yet anyway. Suzuki is the lone outfield rep for a Cubs team that leads MLB in Runs Saved.

C- Luis Torrens has been an elite catcher at thwarting the running game since joining the Mets in 2024. He’s thrown out 46%, 41%, and 41% of would-be basestealers since joining the Mets. He’s a good pitch framer too. Torrens’ 12 Runs Saved already surpass the career-high 11 he had last season.

P- Shota Imanaga edges out Nolan McLean and Michael McGreevy for the lead here via the innings tiebreaker. The key for Imanaga is his 4 pickoffs (tied for best in MLB) against only 3 stolen bases allowed.

1B- Nick Kurtz is more than a power hitter. He’s shown himself to be a credible defender too. Kurtz, Kody Clemens, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tied for the Runs Saved lead but we’re listing Kurtz via the innings played tiebreaker. In addition to having decent range, Kurtz ranks second in Scoops (handling difficult throws) with 15. Only Christian Walker (17) has more.

2B- Cole Young has taken a major step forward in his second season as a big league second baseman. Mariners infield coach Perry Hill said he was looking for consistency from Young and he’s gotten that in a big way. Young has been fantastic at turning balls hit to his right into outs this season, and that’s accounted for a good chunk of his Runs Saved.

3B- The Red Sox got Caleb Durbin from the Brewers this offseason and there was a lot of debate whether to play him at second base or third base. The latter position has worked out just fine. Durbin leads the position in Runs Saved with his best asset being that he’s good at cutting off balls that are hit to his left and turning them into outs.

SS- Taylor Walls has repeatedly been at or near the top of the leaderboard and this season is no different. He’s the best defensive player on a Rays team that ranks third in the major in Runs Saved. Walls has the most Runs Saved among shortstops since 2021 and it’s not close. His 64 are well more than second place Miguel Rojas’ 39.

LF- This position has belonged to Cody Bellinger all season. He’s at 18 Runs Saved. No one else at the position is even in double figures. As we previously wrote, Bellinger has shown a combination of great range all over the field with a good arm. It seems unlikely that anyone will catch his total from either league, making him a strong candidate for a Fielding Bible Award.

CF- Ceddanne Rafaela is making a bid for his second consecutive Fielding Bible Award. He leads AL center fielders and ranks second among all players at the position in Runs Saved. His 5 Outfield Arm Runs Saved already match his total from last season. Over the last three seasons he has 16 such Runs Saved, most of any center fielder.

RF- Wilyer Abreu is easily leading the position in Runs Saved this season. He’s 10 runs ahead of his nearest competitor in either league. He easily surpasses any player in the range component of the stat and is tied for second in the Outfield Arm component of the stat.

C- Austin Wells is hitting .155 but he’s playing regularly because he’s a strong defensive catcher. Wells has a good history as a pitch framer and has shepherded this pitching staff to a 2.90 ERA in the innings he catches and an MLB-best 3.37 ERA overall.

P- Yep, a relief pitcher leads the league in Runs Saved. Brent Suter is an odd case. He leads AL pitchers with 15 assists and has 2 caught stealing and 2 pickoffs. So it may be unusual but he’s got a good resumé.
