    SIS Independents All-Conference Team

    It’s finally time to release our SIS All-Conference teams. We used our all-encompassing player value stat, Total Points, along with other metrics and our scouting work as leading references in putting together our team of selections for 2023, plus some honorable mentions.

    These picks are meant to honor this season’s best-of-the-best of the Independents.

    Sam Hartman made the most of his one season in South Bend and had more Passing Total Points than every other Independent QB COMBINED. Audric Estime was the leader by a substantial amount in Rushing Total Points, but Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams finished Top-30 in the FBS with his 1,153 rushing yards affording him a spot on the team.

    Justin Joly and Mitchell Evans didn’t only lead all TEs in Receiving Total Points, but led all pass catchers among the Independent schools. Anthony Simpson led all Independent receivers in targets, yards, and first downs.

    Each Independent school has at least 1 representative along the offensive line with Joe Alt and Conor Finucane leading the conference in back-to-back years in Blocking Total Points. All five linemen were also Top-5 in Blown Block Percentage, with all of them coming in under 1.2%.

    Javontae Jean-Baptiste led all Independent pass rushers in Pass Rushing Total Points and pressures while coming in 4th for Run Defense Total Points. Billy Wooden led all Independents with 6 sacks from the DT position. Howard Cross III finished 2nd in total pressures and 5th in Run Defense Total Points among Independent defenders. Pryce Yates finished 4th in Pressures and Pass Rush Total Points to round out the defensive front.

    Jackson Mitchell was Top-10 nationally in Run Defense Total Points. JD Bertrand finished as the top Independent LB with 25 Pressures and added four passes defensed in coverage on top of that.

    Notre Dame is well represented on the back-end of the defense with Xavier Watts who was T-1st nationally with 7 INTs and 2nd in the nation in Coverage Total Points. Cam Hart was 2nd among Independent DBs in Coverage Total Points behind his teammate and Benjamin Morrison led all Independent players with 13 passes defensed.

    Spencer Shrader went a near perfect 61-of-62 in extra points and his 4 field goals made of 50+ yards was T-3rd nationally.

    George Caratan had a strong leg and his punt average of 45 yards was Top-5 nationally for all punters with at least 60 punts.

    Jadarian Prince was the only Independent return man with a kick return touchdown, and his kick return average of 26.2 was Top-20 in the FBS.

    TE was a very difficult selection, and as a result, Gino Campiotti earned an honorable mention because he finished 3rd among Independent TEs in both Receiving and Blocking Total Points. Offensive tackle was also a close decision as Chase Lundt finished 3rd among Independent offensive linemen in Total Points, but behind the two tackles who made the All-Conference team.

    Jelani Stafford finished tops among Independent DTs in Run Defense Total Points and Jack Kiser finished 2nd among LBs. Bo-Nicolas Paul finished 3rd in the conference in Coverage Total Points among CBs.

    2023 SIS Preseason Sun Belt All-Conference Team

    As we approach the beginning of the 2023 college football season, we want to highlight some of the top players in each conference by announcing our SIS Preseason All-Conference teams. We used our all-encompassing player value stat, Total Points, along with other metrics and our scouting work as leading references in putting together our selections.

    Grayson McCall has been a dominant force in the Sun Belt as he has led the conference in both passing total points and overall total points the last 3 seasons and will look to stay on top this season. 

    Frank Gore Jr. is the top RB in the conference as his 38 Total Points and his Broken + Missed Tackle % of 32% were both Top-20 in the nation.

    La’Damian Webb isn’t too far behind as his 29 Total Points were good enough to crack the Top-25 in the country and his 13 rushing TDs last season were good for 2nd in the conference last season.

    Webb’s teammate Caullin Lacys On-Target Catch% of 92.5% was good for third in the conference for receivers with a minimum of 75 targets. Tyrone Howell led all receivers in the conference with a minimum of 75 targets with 0.4 Broken & Missed tackles per Reception.

    Khalil Crowder had a Blown Block% of 0.9 in almost 1000 snaps and was second last season in Total points for all OL in the conference with 39. Bucky Williams led all OL with a 0.5% Blown Block rate (with a minimum of 500 snaps ).

    T.J. Jackson was second team All-SIS last season and a big reason was his 41 total points. He is joined by fellow Troy teammate and All-SIS 2nd teamer from last year, Reddy Steward. His 55 Coverage Total Points was good for 4th in the country last season. James Carpenter led all front 7 players with 28 Total Points against the run. 

    Marshall is well represented on the defensive side having 1 representative on each level of the defense. Owen Porter was top-25 in the nation last season with 9.5 sacks and his 27 total points from pass rushing led the conference for front 7 players. Eli Neal was 2nd among LBs in the conference with 24 Total Points against the run. Micah Abraham was 3rd in the conference with 38 Coverage Total Points. Abraham was also tied with South Alabama’s Yam Banks for the conference lead with 6 INTs. Both players tied for 2nd in the nation last season.

    Dominic Zvada went nearly perfect last season going 17-of-18 on FGs and 30-of-31 on XPs. Ethan Duane led the conference with 28 punts inside the 20 and was tied for 3rd in the conference with 10 of them landing inside the 10 yard line. Milan Tucker was 2nd in the conference with 616 KR yards and returned 1 for a TD.

    Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall leads the conference in Total Points with 112, even though he missed 2 games because of injury. Old Dominion’s Ali Jennings III led all receivers in the conference with 31 Total Points and was tied for the conference lead in receiving TDs with 9. 

    Frank Gore Jr. dominated the rest of the conference’s running backs, leading with 55 Total Points and his Broken+Missed Tackle rate of 31.6 % was 2nd in the FBS among all players with at least 200 rushes. Khalan Laborn was no slouch either as he ranked 9th in the FBS with 1,531 yards and tied for 10th with 16 rushing TDs. 

    Georgia Southern’s Khalil Crowder led all OL in the conference in Total Points with 34. Appalachian State’s Cooper Hodges followed closely behind with 33 and Crowder’s teammate, Logan Langemeier, led all OCs in the conference with 32 Total Points.

    Troy’s T.J. Jackson led all DT in the Sun Belt in Total Points with 38 and was a big reason why he was named 2nd Team for our All-American Team. Owen Porter of Marshall was the top edge defender in the Sun Belt with 55 Total Points. He ranked 2nd in the conference in sacks with 9.5 and 2nd in total pressures with 39. Reddy Steward led all DBs in the Sun Belt with 78 Total Points and his Passer Rating Against of 47.3 was 11th among CBs in the FBS with a minimum of 50 targets.

    Dominic Zvada went a near perfect 17-of-18 and his FG% of 94.4 was tied for 6th-best in the FBS for kickers with a minimum of 15 attempts. Ethan Duane’s 28 punts inside the 20 was tied for 6th-best. Johnnie Lang led the nation with 888 KR yards while adding 1 TD.

    Kyle Vantrease was 2nd in the conference in TP with 102 and threw for the 5th-most yards in the FBS. South Alabama’s Yam Banks was in conversation for the 1st Team and his 6 INTs, which was T-2nd in the FBS, is a big reason why.
