    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):

    * What a weird season for the NFC West. The division-leading Rams rank 20th in our overall Total Points Per 60 Plays rankings. They rank 18th in Offense Total Points Per 60 Plays and 18th in Defense Points Saved Per 60 Plays. The Cardinals (10th) are the highest-ranking team overall. The Seahawks are 11th and the last-place 49ers are 12th.

Meanwhile, in the NFC South, the Falcons and Buccaneers are just about even at 15th and 16th, respectively, and their fates will be determined by what happens this weekend.

    * Though Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry are the decisive leaders in rushing yardage, it’s Jahmyr Gibbs who leads all running backs in Total Points. Gibbs made quite a jump from 2023 (24 Total Points, which ranked 11th) to his 59 this season. He’s No. 2 among running backs in both Rushing Total Points and Receiving Total Points.

    * At receiver, Puka Nacua jumped a couple of spots into the lead in Total Points at the position, something made all the more impressive by his playing only 11 games.

Nacua has caught nearly 75% of his targets this season, up from 66% in 2023 and reduced his number of drops from 14 to 1.

    * Let’s hear it for the offensive line Total Points leaders: Tristan Wirfs of the Buccaneers and Dion Dawkins of the Bills are basically even among offensive tackles. Landon Dickerson (Eagles) leads at guard, followed by Kevin Zeitler (Lions). The top center is Hjalte Froholdt (Cardinals).

    * On the defensive side, Rams rookie Jared Verse now leads all defensive ends in Total Points, just ahead of Jonathan Greenard and Myles Garrett. Jeffrey Simmons now leads Defensive Tackles in both overall Total Points and Total Points on a per-snap basis. Zach Baun is the No. 1 linebacker in Total Points. Patrick Surtain II has taken over the lead at cornerback and Kerby Joseph is the runaway leader at safety.

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

    * Entering the final week of the season, Sam Darnold is the only quarterback to complete more than half of his pass attempts thrown at least 20 yards downfield. He’s 32-of-58, 55%.
However, Josh Allen has actually produced the most Passing Points Earned on those throws, despite a 33% completion percentage. Allen ranks 20th among 25 quarterbacks with at least 35 such attempts in completion percentage, but 4th in catchable pass percentage. In other words, he’s given his receivers chances to make big plays even as he’s been pressured on those attempts at a high rate (45%, 3rd-highest).

    * Trey Hendrickson leads the NFL in pressures. The overall team leader is the Broncos with 266 and an NFL-best pressure percentage of 39.2%. And the Eagles lead the NFL in Points Saved from their pass rush.

    Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week.

Find your own matchups and mismatches here. You can also find much of this information at the SIS DataHub Pro.

    Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

    * The Buccaneers are in the playoffs with a with or tie against the Saints. They have decisive edges against New Orleans in Rushing, Receiving, and Blocking and rank in the top six in the NFL in all three. The Saints rank in the bottom half of the league in every defensive unit. The one scary thing that could hinder the Bucs: their 32nd-ranked pass coverage.

    * Meanwhile the Falcons need a win and help to edge out the Buccaneers. The Falcons should be able to take advantage of a Panthers team that ranks last in the NFL in both Run Defense and Pass Rush.

    * In the Vikings-Lions winner-takes-the-NFC North matchup, things to watch include how the Lions’ No.3 Blocking unit handles the Vikings’ No. 5 Run Defense and No. 8 Pass Rush. The biggest vulnerabilities for each team are the Vikings No. 22 Blocking unit and the Lions No. 23 Run Defense and Pass Rush.

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):
    * The top three teams broken down by offensive and defensive unit in terms of Total Points Per Play:
    Offense
    Passing: 1. Ravens, 2. Bengals, 3. Bills
    Rushing: 1. Ravens, 2. Commanders, 3. Bills
    Receiving: 1. Ravens, 2. Lions, 3. 49ers
    Blocking: 1. Bills, 2. Lions, 3. Eagles
Yes, the Ravens rank 1st in three of the four categories (and that doesn’t include anything from Wednesday’s win). They pretty clearly have the best offense in the NFL.
    Defense
Run Defense: 1. Browns, 2. Dolphins, 3. Eagles
Pass Rush: 1. Steelers, 2. Packers, 3. Cowboys
Pass Coverage: 1. Broncos, 2. Chargers, 3. Lions
Nine different teams encompass those top three spots. The Eagles are the No. 1 defense overall. They rank 4th in pass rush and 7th in pass coverage.
    * Two players atop the Total Points leaderboard have at least 10 Total Points more than the next-closest player at that position.
George Kittle is dominating at tight end for the 49ers this season. He leads with 48 Total Points. The next-closest player is Trey McBride of the Cardinals with 35.
Kittle is averaging an NFL-best 11.7 yards per target this season. He ranks 4th among tight ends in average distance of target (8.2 yards), minimum 30 targets.
Lions safety Kerby Joseph leads the position with 65 Total Points. That’s actually the most of any non-quarterback this season.  The next-closest safety is Amani Hooker of the Titans with 51.
Joseph entered the week tied for the NFL lead with 7 interceptions this season.

    * With 2 receptions on passes thrown at least 20 yards downfield last week, Justin Jefferson now has the lead with 14 such receptions this season. Jefferson could lead the league in that stat for the second time in his career. He tied Calvin Ridley for the league lead with 14 in his rookie season.
    * We list the leaders in quarterback pressures below (and in the PDF attachment). But to break it down a little deeper: The current leader in quarterback hurries is Chris Jones and Maxx Crosby with 43. The leader in quarterback hits is Zach Allen with 46. Allen also leads in quarterback knockdowns with 29. No other player entered Week 17 with even 20 knockdowns.

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):
    * There is basically a three-way tie for the top spot within the team Total Points Power Rankings. The Lions, Ravens, and Bills are separated by a fraction of a point.
Perhaps the most interesting thing within those rankings is where the Cardinals stand (8th) relative to their division rivals, the Seahawks (10th) and Rams (21st). The Rams and Seahawks are currently tied for the division lead.
    * For those of you staring at our quarterback Total Points leaderboard and saying “What the heck is Bo Nix doing there?” we’ve got answers. Our Alex Vigderman looked into Nix’s numbers:
In Nix’s case, there are a lot of plays where he does all right and something goes horribly wrong, or the play should have gone horribly wrong and he escapes with a kinda-bad outcome. He’s captaining a ship that absolutely should be sinking and somewhat surprisingly keeping it afloat, which Total Points gives him a ton of credit for

    * Who’s the best cornerback in the NFL? This came up on this week’s Off the Charts Football Podcast after Derek Stingley Jr. had a particularly good game for the Texans in Week 15. Patrick Surtain II moved back into the top spot ahead of Christian Gonzalez, but it’s a tight leaderboard at the top.

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

    * The NFL’s most successful deep passer this season has been Sam Darnold. But the best deep passer has arguably been Justin Herbert. Herbert leads all quarterbacks with a 66% on-target percentage on passes at least 20 yards downfield. Darnold ranks just a little behind at 60%. That Darnold has 27 deep pass completions to Herbert’s 22 is a testament to the quality of Darnold’s receivers.
    * Shout-out to Osa Odighizuwa, who leads the NFL in pressures above expectation (+20.2). Odighizuwa had 7 pressures last week in the Cowboys’ win over the Panthers. He ranks tied for 13th with 50 pressures this season.

    * Two teams to watch that have top-end Pass Rush and Pass Coverage groups: the Texans (ranked 6th and 5th, respectively) against the Chiefs and (maybe) a hobbled Patrick Mahomes, and the Vikings (ranked 7th in both areas) against also-potentially hobbled Geno Smith and the Seahawks, whose Blocking ranks last in the NFL.

    * There’s one team that ranks in the top 10 in six of the seven groupings we measure (Passing, Rushing, Receiving, Blocking, Run Defense, Pass Rush, Pass Coverage).

It’s not the Bills and not the Eagles. It’s actually the Packers, who face the Saints on Monday Night Football. The Saints rank in the bottom half of the NFL in four of those groupings, so Green Bay has a significant advantage.

    Total Points Leaderboards

Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):

    * The teams with the top four offenses in Total Points Per Play rank within the top four teams overall (Ravens, Bills, Lions, Packers). The teams with the top four defenses in Total Points per play rank 5th, 10th, 11th, and 7th overall (Broncos, Chargers, Steelers, Eagles).

    * There is considerable parity among the top NFL defenses.

The No. 1 defense (Broncos) and No. 10 defense (Packers) are separated by 2 Total Points Per Play.

The No. 1 offense (Ravens) and No. 10 offense (Chiefs) are separated by 9 Total Points Per Play.

Derek Carr took advantage of matchups against the Panthers and Cowboys and locked in his per-play production to move up the Total Points ranks. Carr ranks 8th among quarterbacks in Total Points this season and 4th at the position in Total Points Per Play.

Christian Gonzalez might seem like an odd name atop the list of top cornerbacks in Total Points given where the Patriots rank in Pass Defense. But he’s proven his worth as a 2023 1st-round pick. Gonzalez ranks 8th at the position in Pass Defense Points Saved but where he makes up for that is in Run Defense Points Saved, where he ranks 2nd.

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, and Josh Jacobs rank 1-2-3 in rushing yards after contact this season. Henry and Jacobs are 1-2 in Total Points among running backs with Barkley 10th.

Why does Barkley rank so low? James Weaver explained in an article on our website this week.

“Part of this low total can be attributed to his low broken and missed tackle rate which sits at only 10%, the 5th-lowest among RB’s with 100 carries. The other factor contributing is how good his offensive line is. The Eagles O-line has accumulated the most run blocking Total Points and has the 3rd-lowest blown block percentage on run plays.”

    Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week.

Find your own matchups and mismatches here. You can also find much of this information at the SIS DataHub.

    Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

    * Good matchups abound in Eagles vs Steelers (aka Wawa vs Sheetz). The Steelers have the 3rd-ranked Rush Defense to try to stop Saquon Barkley and the No. 1 pass rush to thwart Jalen Hurts. But they’ll be going against a No. 1 Eagles Blocking unit (for more on this game … and Wawa vs Sheetz, check out The SIS Off The Charts Football Podcast)

    * The Lions have some defense vulnerabilities heading into their game against the Bills. They rank 18th in Run Defense and 16th in Pass Rush. The Bills rank 6th or better in Passing, Rushing, Receiving, and Blocking.

And check out our new account on Bluesky, where we go beyond what’s in the StatPack to bring you even more football insights.

For example, this week we put the spotlight on an area where the Lions have a big edge against the Bills.

Something to watch this weekend: Lions have a huge edge on the Bills specifically when they pass out of 11 personnel Lions rank 2nd in success rate on those plays Bills rank 28th in defending against it

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):
    * The five teams listed below as the top defenses in Total Points Per Play are all basically even. The Chargers rank No. 1 by virtue of their top ranking in Pass Coverage. That offsets their ranking 25th in Run Defense and 16th in Pass Coverage.
    * Four teams currently have a 6-6 record but they vastly differ in overall ranking. The Cardinals come in 12th overall, the Falcons are 16th, the Buccaneers are 21st, and the Rams are 22nd.

    * On the strength of three straight good games, including 152 rushing yards against the Panthers last week, Buccaneers rookie running back Bucky Irving now ranks 3rd among running backs. He leads all rookies in rushing yards and all rookie running backs in receiving yards.

Other rookies ranking in the top 5 at a position include Bo Nix (3rd, QB), Jayden Daniels (5th, QB), Brock Bowers (3rd, TE), Jared Verse (1st, DE), and Kamari Lassiter (4th, CB).

    * Lions safety Kerby Joseph is the runaway leader in Total Points not just at his position, but among all defensive players. Joseph’s 7 interceptions in 2024 are tied for the NFL lead. He has allowed 8 completions and no touchdown passes as a primary defender.

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

    * Josh Allen isn’t listed among the leaders in completion percentage on 20-yard passes, but that’s not his fault, as 75% of his passes have been catchable, the fourth-highest rate in the NFL. Allen actually ranks 1st in terms of Points Earned on deep throws. He’s recorded 45 attempts with 17 completions and no interceptions.
    * Check out our new account on Bluesky, where we go beyond what’s in the StatPack to bring you even more football insights.
For example, this week we put the spotlight on Derek Stingley Jr. Stingley ranks 6th among cornerbacks in Total Points and in terms of charting stats, a primary reason why is that opponents are 5-of-35 on passes thrown at least 10 yards downfield when he is the targeted defensive back.

    Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week.

    Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

    * The Bills rank in the top eight in the NFL in every facet (Passing, Rushing, Receiving, Blocking, Run Defense, Pass Rush, Pass Coverage). Their opponent, the Rams do so in only one area (Pass Rush).

    * Check out this week’s Off the Charts Football Podcast for an in-depth dissection of Sunday night’s Chargers-Chiefs matchup, in which the Chargers top-ranked Pass Coverage takes on a Chiefs offense that may not rank as high as you would think (currently 10th overall).

    * The Raiders and Buccaneers matchup is amusing in that it pits the teams with the two worst pass coverage units in the NFL against each other. Both teams rank in the top 10 in Receiving but in the bottom 10 in Passing, so it’s anyone’s guess whether the offenses will be able to take advantage.

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):
    * The Steelers hold a 1 1/2 game lead over the Ravens in the AFC North, but in terms of our leaders in Total Points Per Play, the Ravens have a decisive advantage. They rank 3rd overall. The Steelers rank 14th.

The Ravens offense ranks No. 1, 21 spots ahead of the Steelers, though Pittsburgh’s defense (No. 10), is well ahead of the Ravens (26th).

    * Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow are 1-2 in Total Points among quarterbacks and then there is a sizable gap below them to get to the surprise quarterback at No. 3, Bo Nix.

Also of note on the quarterback leaderboard: Derek Carr ranks seventh overall despite missing three games with an injury. He’s fifth among quarterbacks on a per-play basis.

     * Brock Bowers had 13 receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders’ loss to the Dolphins last week. With that, he moved into the lead for Total Points among tight ends. That was impressive given that he entered last week 7 points behind the stat leader, George Kittle, who now ranks second.

    * Not listed below, but included in the StatPack link below: The offensive line leaders are Dion Dawkins (tackle, Bills), Landon Dickerson (guard, Eagles), and Frank Ragnow (center, Lions). This isn’t surprising. Dawkins and Ragnow have been selected to to three Pro Bowls. Dickerson has been chosen for two.

    Charting Leaderboards

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

    * Justin Herbert went 4-of-8 on deep throws (at least 20 yards beyond the line of scrimmage) last week against the Bengals. He could have been even better. Of those 8 passes, 7 were deemed catchable. Herbert ranks second in catchable percentage on throws that length (28-of-35, 80%). Only Derek Carr (22-of-27, 81%) ranks higher.

    * Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed has caught 78% of his targets this season (38-of-49). That includes 9-of-10 on passes thrown at least 20 yards downfield. The 90% completion percentage is best in the NFL. The 9 receptions ranks tied for third.

    * Denver’s Zach Allen ranks third in both pressures and pressures above expectation this season. Allen, in his sixth NFL season, has never been a Pro Bowl selection, but he could be this year. He already has a career-high 12 tackles for loss, one behind Andrew Van Ginkel for the NFL lead.

    Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

    * The Sunday Night Football matchup between the Eagles and Rams is a matchup of the two best teams in Pass Rush. The Eagles are better equipped to handle it. They rank ninth overall in Blocking. The Rams rank 18th.

    * In the Monday Night Football matchup between the Ravens and Chargers, it will be a test for the Chargers’ pass coverage, which ranks second in the NFL, against a Ravens team that ranks first in both Passing and Receiving.

    * If you predicted that the Cowboys would rank 31st in Passing, Run Defense, and Pass Coverage entering Week 12 before the season started, hats off to you. Where Washington could take advantage most is on the ground. The Commanders rank second in Rushing.

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):
    * The Rams offense struggled to get into a groove against the Dolphins on Monday night, which only sank them further to a surprisingly-low 26th rank offensively. The missed time from Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua hurt, of course, but their receiving group has still been their best position group, at 16th.
    * Ja’Marr Chase’s 264-yard outburst against the Ravens leapt him to the top of the wide receiver Total Points rankings. His play alone was worth roughly 12 points on the scoreboard, which was more than any quarterback was worth in Week 10.
    * Speaking of Monday night, Dolphins DE Calais Campbell is having a throwback season, currently ranking tied for third at the position in Total Points (and second on a per-snap basis). He had ranked in the top 10 in each of 2016 to 2019, but no better than 26th over the past four years.
    * The 5-interception showing from Jared Goff dropped him several ranks among quarterbacks, and he’s now sitting at 29th among quarterbacks in Total Points per play. He still ranks above his opponent in that game, C.J. Stroud, who sits at 32nd among qualified passers.

    Charting Leaderboards

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

    * The potential return of Nico Collins is crucial for the Texans, but it’s a two way street when it comes to C.J. Stroud’s deep ball performance. He has thrown the second-most passes of at least 20 air yards (40), but is tied for 11th in completions on those throws (12). Only Caleb Williams and Deshaun Watson have thrown a lower percentage of catchable deep passes.

    * The Vikings’ receivers have done Sam Darnold many favors over the course of the year. Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison have each caught all of their catchable deep passes this year, making up 13 of Darnold’s league-leading 18 deep completions.

    * Washington’s Dante Fowler Jr. has bounced around quite a bit over his career, but he’s making his mark in his first season as a Commander. He leads the NFL in sack rate and is backing that up with a 5th-ranked Pressure% +/-, which expresses how well he’s pressured the quarterback given his alignment and the game situation.

    Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and comparing the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week.

    Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

    * The Ravens bring the best offense in the NFL into Pittsburgh, hoping to exploit a beatable Steelers secondary. Baltimore ranks 1st in Passing and Receiving, while the Steelers rank 26th in Pass Coverage (and no worst than 3rd in the other defensive categories).

    * Bo Nix has been a Total Points darling this year, pushing the Broncos‘ Passing rank to 3rd. He’s made a reputation for escaping pressure, but he might not have to worry that much when facing the Falcons‘ 31st-ranked Pass Rush.

    * The Chargers are a little banged up in the secondary, but on the season their Pass Coverage ranks 1st in Total Points per play. They’ll need to be at full strength to take on the Bengals, ranked 2nd in Passing and 6th in Receiving.

    Hi!

The last few years we’ve been sending out a weekly stat package e-mail to help get you ready for the weekend’s games.

Hopefully you’ll think this year’s version is been even better. One thing we noticed: Not many people are downloading the attachment. So we’re putting more information into the body of this e-mail. Read to the end. There’s lots of good stuff here.
Our goal is to bring the stats to you so that you don’t have to go hunting them down.
Let us know that we’ve done that.

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):

    * There’s a lot of parity within the list of the Top 10 NFL teams by Totals Points Per Play. The teams ranked 6 through 10 all stand within one point of being in the Top 5.

    * All of the teams that rank Top 5 in Offense are among the Top 10 teams overall. But the Titans have the No. 2 defense and rank No. 26 overall because their offense ranks last in Total Points Per Play.

    * If you download the Statpack, you’ll see that the Buccaneers have the Total Points leader both among tackles (Tristan Wirfs) and guards (Cody Mauch). The Buccaneers rank No. 3 in Blocking Total Points behind the Lions and Bills.

    * Third-year receiver Khalil Shakir has made a nice move up the Total Points leaderboard such that he now ranks No. 2 among wide receivers in both Total Points and Total Points Per 60 Plays.

    * One of the keys to that Titans’ No. 2 defense is defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who leads the position in Total Points Per 60 Plays. Another is Amani Hooker, who ranks No. 2 among safeties in Total Points and ranks No. 3 at that position in Total Points Per 60 Plays.

    Charting Leaderboards

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

    * Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed now has 9 receptions on 10 targets that were at least 20 yards downfield. All of the other receivers with at least 8 targets have a completion percentage of less than 65%.
    * James Conner’s 46 broken and missed tackles are 12 more than the next-closest player. And that’s not just about volume. Conner has the highest percentage of runs with a broken or missed tackle of anyone, 26%, just ahead of Caleb Williams.
    * Trey Hendrickson now leads the NFL in pressures and is just behind Aidan Hutchinson in pressures above expectation. Yes, Hutchinson was that far ahead of everyone else that he’s still in the lead even though he played in only 5 games.

When we look at matchups by unit and comparing the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week.

    Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

    * The Cowboys will be in for a challenge in a couple of respects this week. They rank last in the NFL in Run Defense while the Eagles rank No. 8 in Rushing. Dallas also ranks 27th in Blocking and will be going up against Philadelphia’s No. 1 ranked Pass Rush.

    * The Chargers defense may feast on the Titans. Their Pass Coverage ranks No. 1 and will be facing a team that ranks 30th in Passing and 31st in Receiving.

    * One highlight of the Washington-Pittsburgh matchup: The Steelers have the No. 1 Run Defense. The Commanders rank No. 2 in Rushing.

    * The 49ers rank No. 2 in Receiving and are going against a Buccaneers team that ranks No. 31 in Pass Coverage.

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):

    * Only two teams rank in the Top 10 in Total Points Per Play on both offense and defense – the Bills (2nd and 7th, respectively) and the Chiefs (6th and 4th). The big imbalances are with the Ravens (1st and 25th) and Chargers (28th and 1st).

    * The 49ers have the highest ranking among teams with a .500 or worse record. They check in at No. 7 overall and rank No. 7 on offense and No. 11 on defense.

    * Eleven teams have a worse record than the 3-4 Cowboys but Dallas ranks 31st overall in Total Points Per Play. The Cowboys rank 26th on offense and 31st on defense.

    * Best game by a QB last week per Points Above Average? That was by Bo Nix, who now ranks 3rd in Total Points and 4th in Total Points Per Play among quarterbacks this season. On a per-play basis, he’s been a match for Patrick Mahomes.

    * George Kittle had a big game against the Cowboys with 6 receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown. He widened his lead in Total Points among tight ends (he has 23, next-closest is 18) and took over the top spot in Totals Points Per Play (3.6) in that win.

    * A.J. Terrell led all cornerbacks with 10 Pass Defense Points Saved in Week 8 and vaulted to No.3 among cornerbacks in Total Points for the season. Terrell, a second-team All-Pro selection in 2021 had an interception in the Falcons’ win over the Buccaneers. His 40 tackles in 2024 are only 5 fewer than he had all last season.

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

    * Only two quarterbacks have completed more than half of their pass attempts thrown more than 20 yards downfield – Jared Goff (8-of-13) and Sam Darnold (14-of-24). Darnold’s 14 deep completions lead the NFL. He leads in deep completions but ranks outside the Top 15 in deep pass attempts.

    * Najee Harris continues to just battle against opposing defenses. He’s had three straight 100-yard rushing games, netting at least 70 yards after contact in each one. Harris has 239 rushing yards after contact the last three games after totaling 206 in his first five games.

    * Broncos defensive end Zach Allen has played six seasons in the NFL and has never garnered any awards for his play. But 2024 might be different. Allen ranks 2nd in the NFL in both pressures (37) and Pressures Above Expectation (11.4).

    Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and comparing the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week.

    Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

    * One of the most interesting games of Week 9 is a matchup of the No. 1 Passing and No. 1 Receiving Ravens team and the No. 1 Broncos Pass Coverage group.

    * The Falcons have another highly favorable matchup with an offense that ranks in the top 10 in Passing, Rushing, and Receiving going against a Cowboys defense that ranks among the bottom three teams in Run Defense, Pass Rush, and Pass Coverage.

Similarly the Bengals No. 2 Passing and No. 12 Receiving units have a good matchup with a Raiders team that ranks No. 26 in Pass Rush and No. 28 in Pass Coverage.

And the Chiefs No. 4 Passing and No. 7 Receiving groups look to be in good shape against a Buccaneers team that ranks No. 24 in Pass Rush and No. 31 in Pass Coverage.

    Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):

    * Yes, that is the Broncos with a 4-3 record ranked No. 2 overall thanks to their No. 2 ranked defense.

There is basically no difference between the teams ranked No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 in Total Points per 60 plays (that encompasses the Broncos, Vikings, Ravens, and Chiefs, with No. 1 being the Lions).

    * Lamar Jackson had the best game of any quarterback in terms of Points Above Average last week and the reward for that was that he moved into the No. 1 spot in Total Points for quarterbacks. There’s decent distance between him and the No. 2, Joe Burrow.

    * You’ll have to click on the Statpack link to see it, but the No. 1 offensive lineman in Total Points right now is Buccaneers tackle Tristan Wirfs. Wirfs is a three-time Pro Bowl selection who was named first-team All-Pro in 2021.

    * The Giants are 2-5 but have the No. 1 defensive tackle in Total Points (Dexter Lawrence) and the No. 2 linebacker (Brian Burns). The Lions, at least for the moment, can go one better. Aidan Hutchinson remains the No. 1 defensive end (until T.J. Watt surpasses him) and Kerby Joseph is the No. 1 safety.

*There are great matchups between the Bears and Commanders on Sunday. Washington ranks No. 4 in Passing, No. 10 in Receiving, and No. 2 in Rushing, but the Bears are formidable, at No. 3 in Pass Rush, No. 7 in Pass Coverage, and No. 12 in Rush Defense.

    * The Eagles need to get to Joe Burrow with their advantage in Pass Rush. They rank No. 2 there and the Bengals rank No. 24 in Blocking. If they don’t, the Bengals will likely take advantage of their ranking No. 2 in Passing and No. 6 in Receiving, against an Eagles group that ranks No. 26 in Pass Coverage.

    * Falcons QB Kirk Cousins could be primed for another big day. The Buccaneers rank No. 24 in Pass Rush and No. 31 in Pass Coverage.

    * Chiefs-Raiders could get pretty ugly. Among the seven team units we calculate Total Points Per Play for, the Chiefs’ average ranking is 10th. The Raiders’ average ranking is 25th. The Raiders are a bottom-three team in Rushing, Blocking, and Pass Coverage.
